Key Issues

Observations

It’s important to articulate ‘the why’ when making decisions. I strive to facilitate a better public understanding of the process and purpose of decisions that come before the board. Working with the different city departments has provided deeper insight into the process of how projects come to fruition. Public perspectives on how to best meet community needs vary but are critical to being able to better address the whys behind each determination in order to achieve the best outcome. Community members care deeply about our city, and we all want it to be the best it can be, and this includes our city staff. We all have a vested interest in Carson City being an amazing place to live, work and play.

Challenges & Opportunities

Supervisors are tasked with making decisions that can have far-reaching consequences, often with many conflicting stakeholder opinions. My unwavering commitment to doing my homework, having honest and respectful dialogue, and approaching each agenda item with an open mind ensures I meet each challenge with the preparation and respect it deserves. As a Carson City native, I’ve seen this community grow and evolve through the years in both positive and negative ways. The impact a decision can have on quality of life of not lost on me.

Priorities

The conditions of our local roads are deteriorating due to increased maintenance costs and funding shortfalls. Road related functions of pavement maintenance, access, mobility and safety, right-of-way, and reconstruction of failed roadways are costly but essential. Our current funding mechanisms have not kept up with costs or maintenance needs. It’s imperative that we figure out a financing strategy that addresses community needs and concerns in a more equitable way. All vehicles (gas, hybrid, electric) impact our roads; maintenance costs should be shared by all users, residents, and visitors alike. Everyone benefits from well maintained roads.

Housing instability is another concern. People are finding it more difficult to rent or purchase a home in Carson City due to high housing/rent costs and low inventory, which then directly impacts our schools, businesses, workforce and commute times.

Serving on the National NACo Housing Taskforce, I met with local leaders throughout the country working on ways to better address the housing challenges that so many communities face. In addition to creating more obtainable housing, it’s important that Carson City continue our commitment to help mitigate the impacts that homelessness has on everyone. Carson City’s three tiered Survive Stabilize Thrive outreach program is designed to help meet these challenges, yet there is more to do.
